Claude Can Now Edit Your Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on October 6, 2026. It's a sidebar that opens next to whatever you're working on in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides, and it can read the file and make edits for you, which you either approve one by one or let it apply automatically.
If you already live in Google's apps and already pay for Claude, this is the integration that puts the two together without copying text back and forth. Here's what it actually does, who gets it, and how to turn it on.
⚡ Quick facts
- Launched: October 6, 2026, in public beta
- Where: A sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, via the Google Workspace Marketplace
- Who gets it: All paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise); not available on the free plan
- Cost: Included with your existing Claude subscription, no extra charge
- Edit modes: "Confirm Before Editing" (review each change) or "Accept All" (Claude edits directly)
- Also new: Claude connectors for Docs, Sheets and Slides, so you can paste a file link into a normal Claude chat and edit it from there
What Anthropic actually launched
Claude for Google Workspace is a sidebar add-on. Open a Google Doc, Sheet or Slide, launch the sidebar from the add-ons menu, and Claude can see the file you have open and act on it directly, without you needing to copy and paste content into a separate chat window.
It's in public beta, available to all paid Claude plans through the Google Workspace Marketplace. Anthropic hasn't given a timeline for when it leaves beta or whether it will ever reach the free plan.
What it can do in each app
The capabilities differ by app, matched to what people actually do in each one:
- Google Docs: fix spelling, rewrite sections, or restyle parts of a document, without breaking the formatting you already have.
- Google Sheets: write formulas or build tables using the context of the sheet you're in, or upload an extra document or spreadsheet and have Claude build something new from it.
- Google Slides: add new slides that match your existing layout or theme, or flag elements on a slide that look out of date.
There's a second way in, too. New Claude connectors for Docs, Sheets and Slides let you paste a file link straight into a regular Claude conversation and edit that file from there, without opening the sidebar at all.
How much control you keep
The sidebar runs in one of two modes. "Confirm Before Editing" shows you each proposed change and waits for you to approve it, which is the safer choice for a document other people are also working in. "Accept All" lets Claude make edits directly, which is faster if you're working alone and trust the output.
Either way, the edits happen inside the real Google file, which means normal Google Docs version history still applies if you need to undo something.
How this is different from Claude's own Docs and Slides
It's easy to confuse this with Claude Docs & Slides, a separate feature Anthropic already shipped where Claude creates and holds documents inside Anthropic's own app. That one keeps you inside Claude's interface.
Claude for Google Workspace does the opposite. It brings Claude into the Google apps you already use, as a sidebar on top of a file that still lives in your Google Drive. Which one is useful to you depends on whether your documents already live in Claude or in Google.
Why it matters
A huge amount of real office work still happens in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, not inside a chatbot window. Putting Claude directly into those apps, rather than asking people to copy content out and back in, is a bet that AI assistance is more useful where the work already lives than as a separate destination.
It also puts Claude in more direct competition with Google's own Gemini, which is already built into Workspace by default. Whether Claude's sidebar wins out will come down to whether people find its edits better, not whether the integration itself is novel.
Frequently asked questions
What is Claude for Google Workspace?
A sidebar from Anthropic that opens alongside your file in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides, launched in public beta on October 6, 2026. It can read the file you have open and make edits you review before they're applied.
Do I need a paid Claude plan to use it?
Yes. The beta is available to all paid Claude plans, including Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, through the Google Workspace Marketplace. There's no separate charge beyond your existing Claude subscription.
What can Claude actually do in Google Docs?
In Docs, it can fix spelling, rewrite sections, or restyle parts of a document without breaking your existing formatting. In Sheets, it can write formulas and build tables using the document's own context, or pull in an uploaded file to build something new. In Slides, it can add new slides that match your existing layout or theme, or flag elements that look out of date.
Can Claude edit my files without asking first?
You choose. The sidebar has two modes: 'Confirm Before Editing', where you approve each change, and 'Accept All', where Claude applies edits directly. The confirm mode is the safer default for anyone sharing a document with other people.
Is this the same as the Claude Docs and Slides feature Anthropic already has?
No. That's a separate product where Claude creates and holds documents inside Anthropic's own Claude app. Claude for Google Workspace is the opposite: Claude works inside your existing Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files, as a sidebar.
How do I turn it on?
Install the Claude for Google Workspace add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a Doc, Sheet or Slide, and launch the sidebar from the add-ons menu. You'll need to be signed in with a paid Claude account.
