Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live, Explained

Google just made three of its most-used apps voice-first. In early September 2026, Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Keep each got a new "Live" mode built on Gemini -- so instead of typing, you can talk your way through searching your inbox, drafting a document, or capturing a rambling thought as an organized note. Here's what each one actually does, what it costs, and whether it reaches India.

What each "Live" feature actually does

All three features were first previewed at Google I/O back in May 2026 and have now shipped generally after months of testing. They share the same idea -- a live, spoken conversation with Gemini instead of typing or tapping through menus -- but each is built for a different job:

• Gmail Live lets you have a natural, spoken conversation with your inbox to pull up specific information -- "did I get a reply from the landlord?" or "what time is my flight on Friday?" -- instead of typing a search and scrolling through threads. It shows a live transcript as you talk, plus links back to the source emails it pulled the answer from.
• Docs Live works as what Google calls a "hands-free thought partner and co-writer." You describe what you want to write -- a summary, a proposal, an email draft -- and Gemini produces a first draft, pulling in relevant context from Gmail, Drive, chat, and the web where useful, and showing a quick recap of what it found before generating the document.
• Keep Live is a voice-enabled scratchpad. Ramble through a stream-of-consciousness voice note -- a recipe, a packing list, a set of errands -- and Gemini listens to the "audio brain dump" and turns it into an organized note or checklist, showing an inline preview a few seconds in.

Which plan you need, and how to turn each one on

The three features don't share the same pricing tier, which is an easy detail to miss:

• Gmail Live: included with Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra, on Android and iOS, in English worldwide. Tap the new Live icon in the Gmail search bar to start talking.
• Docs Live: restricted to Google AI Pro and Ultra -- it isn't part of the cheaper Plus tier. In the Docs app, tap the floating action button and choose "Create with voice."
• Keep Live: included with AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra, currently rolling out on Android. Activate it from the voice option inside the Keep app.

Google says all three are "coming soon" for Google Workspace business customers, on top of the consumer Google AI subscriptions.

Does this work in India?

Google's own language for Gmail Live is that it's rolling out on Android and iOS "in English worldwide," without calling out specific excluded countries -- so it should be reachable for Indian users who already hold a qualifying Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription (the same subscriptions covered in our earlier pieces on Google AI Plus for students and Jio's free Google AI Pro offer). Google hasn't published a country-by-country availability list specifically for Docs Live or Keep Live, so treat those two as "should work if your account and language are set to English" rather than confirmed for India.

Why now: Google's bigger voice-first push

This isn't an isolated update. Google has been leaning harder into voice across its product line through 2026 -- from the Pixel 11's Gemini-powered "Rambler" dictation tool to Gemini Live's expansion inside the main Gemini app. Turning Gmail, Docs, and Keep into voice-first surfaces extends that same bet to the Workspace apps hundreds of millions of people already use daily, rather than asking them to switch to a separate assistant app to get similar functionality.
