Notion AI Guide: Agents, Q&A, Meeting Notes and Autofill
Notion AI is built into the Notion workspace, so it works with the pages and databases you already keep there. That is its main advantage over a separate chatbot: it can search your notes, summarise a long page, fill in a database column and carry out multi-step tasks without you pasting anything in. This guide covers the main features, how to start, and where the output needs a human check.
⚡ Quick facts
- What it is: AI features built into the Notion workspace
- Main features: Workspace Q&A, agents, meeting notes, writing help and database autofill
- Best for: Teams that already keep documents, tasks and wikis in Notion
- Depends on: How well your workspace is organised and which apps are connected
- Check first: Which plan includes AI, since Notion’s packaging has changed
What Notion AI can do
Notion’s AI page is the official reference. Since Notion rebuilt its AI around agents in late 2025, the assistant is less a text box for rewriting and more a worker that can use your workspace. The features below are the ones to know. Because Notion updates them often, confirm specifics in its help center.
Ask questions across your workspace
You can ask things like “what did we decide about the October launch?” and get an answer drawn from your pages, with references to where it came from. Reviewers note that answers depend on what is in your workspace and on which tools you connect, such as Slack or Google Drive. Messy or outdated pages produce messy or outdated answers.
Agents
An agent can take a multi-step task, such as collecting notes from several pages into a status report or updating a set of database rows. You can give it instructions about tone and process. Start with a task whose result you can check quickly, and look at what it changed.
Meeting notes
Notion can record or transcribe a meeting and produce a summary with decisions and action items. Treat it as a working draft. Names, numbers and who said what should be checked against the people who were there, especially for anything contractual.
Database autofill
In a database, AI properties can fill a column automatically, for example summarising a row, tagging a category or extracting an action item. This is useful for tidying large lists of tasks, feedback or research notes.
Writing help
You can summarise a page, change tone, fix spelling, translate or continue a draft. As with any generated text, read it before sharing.
Getting started
- Confirm that your plan includes AI features and that an admin has enabled them for your workspace.
- Open the AI panel from a page and ask a question about content you know well, so you can judge the answer.
- Try summarising one long page and compare it with what you remember.
- Add an AI property to a small database and review the results before applying them widely.
- Connect other apps only after you understand what data the AI can then read.
Limits to remember
- Garbage in, garbage out. The assistant is only as good as your pages. Archive stale content and keep titles clear.
- Permissions matter. AI answers should respect page permissions, but review sharing settings and your company’s data policy before enabling connectors.
- Not a record. Summaries and transcripts are convenience tools, not official minutes.
- Plans change. Features and limits vary by plan and over time.
How it compares
If your work lives in Google Workspace, Gemini and Claude both offer sidebars there; see our reports on Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides and Claude’s own docs and slides workspace. Frequently asked questions
Is Notion AI included with every Notion plan?
Notion has changed how it packages AI over time, so it is not safe to assume. Check Notion’s current pricing and plan page, and ask your workspace admin whether AI is turned on.
Can Notion AI search all my pages?
It can answer from content it has access to in your workspace, and it can include connected apps when they are set up. Page permissions, workspace organisation and connector setup all affect the result.
Are Notion AI meeting notes accurate?
They are useful drafts, but they can miss context or misattribute statements. Check important items such as decisions, numbers and owners with the participants.
What is a Notion agent?
An agent is an AI worker that can carry out multi-step tasks in your workspace, such as gathering information from several pages or updating database rows, following instructions you give it.
Is Notion AI safe for company data?
Review Notion’s security and privacy documentation and your company’s policy first. Be deliberate about which connectors you enable, because they widen what the AI can read.
