Claude for Teachers Is Now Free for Entire US Schools, Explained

Anthropic has expanded Claude for Teachers beyond individual sign-ups to cover whole K-12 schools and districts in the US — free for a year if they sign up in time. It's the latest move in a fast-heating race between Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to become the default AI tool in American classrooms. Here's what's actually on offer and how it works.

From individual teachers to whole districts

Anthropic first launched Claude for Teachers on July 14, 2026, giving verified individual K-12 educators in the US free access to premium Claude capabilities: lesson planning aligned to state standards, differentiation tools for students at different readiness levels, Claude Code and Cowork for automating routine tasks, and integrations with classroom tools like MagicSchool, Canva Education, Brisk Teaching, and Diffit.

On August 28, 2026, Anthropic extended the program to organizations — meaning an entire school or district can now be brought under one centrally managed Claude account, rather than relying on individual teachers signing up on their own.

What a school or district actually gets

A verified school or district administrator accepts Anthropic's K-12-specific terms and a student data privacy agreement, then connects the organization's email domain and single sign-on. Any teachers who'd already verified individually on that domain get folded into the managed account automatically ("domain capture," in Anthropic's terms).

From there, admins get:

• Role-based access control and single sign-on across the organization
• The ability to add and remove staff and set usage policies centrally
• Visibility into adoption across schools in the district
• Two new teaching skills co-developed with Learning Commons: lesson preparation and standards-aligned checks for understanding (math at launch)
• Accessibility upgrades to student-facing materials, plus the updated Claude for K-12 Academy — free courses and classroom workflows for teachers, coaches, and district teams

The catch: it's US-only, and there's a clock

This offer is limited to US K-12 schools and districts — there's no equivalent program for Indian schools yet. Organizations need to sign up by June 30, 2027 to lock in a full year of free access; usage limits mirror the individual Claude for Teachers accounts, and overage billing is disabled by default so a district can't be surprised by a bill. What happens after the free year for schools that sign up later isn't spelled out publicly yet.

Privacy and the FERPA question

Anthropic states that Claude for Teachers data isn't used to train its models, and that schools get an organization-level K-12 Terms of Service and Data Processing Agreement designed to align with FERPA, the US federal law protecting student education records. Classroom data analysis uses de-identified information by default, and using identifiable student records requires explicit school or district authorization. American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten welcomed the privacy commitments when the individual version launched, calling it "a tool designed by and for educators" — though some education commentators have flagged the broader trend of AI companies competing hard for access to classrooms as worth watching closely, given how young the research base still is on AI's effects on learning.

Anthropic says it's separately piloting an impact evaluation with Detroit Public Schools Community District this fall, focused on educator wellbeing and instructional practice — an early signal of how it plans to measure whether the tool actually helps.
