Adobe has long been known for image-generation AI through its Firefly brand, but video was the one format it stayed away from — until now. The company recently opened up Firefly Video AI, letting users type a short description and get a few seconds of generated footage back. It is still early, but the move shifts Adobe from a purely image-first AI shop into the broader generative-video space dominated by startups like Runway, Pika, and Luma.

Why did Adobe wait so long on video?

Image generation matured faster because pixels are easier to predict than motion. Every frame in a video must not only look right on its own, but also flow smoothly from the previous one — a much harder constraint. Adobe chose to ship Firefly Video only after internal tests showed consistent motion coherence, something many early competitors struggled with.

That conservative approach means Firefly Video clips tend to look less glitchy than outputs from first-generation models, even if they are shorter and less ambitious in what they attempt.

How does Firefly Video actually work?

You open the Firefly web app, switch to the video section, type a prompt like "a cat walking through a sunlit forest, cinematic lighting," pick a style preset, and hit generate. The model then produces a short clip rendered at up to 1080p for paid users.

Adobe is also building plugins for Premiere Pro and After Effects so professional editors can drop generated clips directly into timelines, trim them, and composite them alongside live-action footage without leaving the editing environment.

Firefly vs Runway vs Pika: who wins?

Runway Gen-3 remains the leader in raw creative range — longer clips, stronger camera-control tools, and support for reference images. Pika 2.0 excels at stylised or cartoon-like motion and lets you modify specific regions inside a video after generation.

Firefly's edge is ecosystem integration. If your workflow already lives inside Adobe products, Firefly Video saves you from exporting, re-uploading, and reconciling formats across multiple apps. For casual creators who want quick social-media clips without learning a new tool, it is arguably the easiest entry point available.

What can't Firefly Video do yet?

As of launch, Firefly Video does not support image-to-video conversion, character consistency across shots, or explicit camera-direction controls like pan, tilt, or zoom commands. Those features have been roadmapped, but Adobe is rolling them out gradually rather than shipping everything at once.

There is also a generative-credit cap. Free users get a small monthly allowance, and heavy creators will need a paid Firefly or full Creative Cloud subscription to keep generating without throttling.
